Sandwich This Salami

Did this meatless stud meet (meat?) the cut?

I was craving an epic sandwich – you know the one that’s dressed with lettuce-type things, a hearty bun, and some good stuff in the middle.

I picked up a pack of Yves’ veggie salami. I’ve tried their other flavors like turkey, so I figure I’d give the faux red meat a chance. It’s been awhile since I’ve had salami – but I can still describe every bite of it. So, it’s safe to say I had some expectations.

One thing that I thought was super cool was that for 5 slices, it only adds up to a very small 80 calories. I actually ate 3 slices (which ended up in a sandwich after the taste test).

Okay, let’s get to it.

Appearance: Looks just pretty damn close to real salami. I’d say real salami does have a deeper red color and the seasonings appear much more prominent in the slices. Reminder, this is how I recall real salami! But for being vegan, this is pretty close. I’d be tricked if this was served on a platter of cheese and real deli meats.

Texture: I expected the texture to be a little more firm. These slices are a little more bendable and softer than what I remember salami. I definitely remember them being a little tougher and obviously ‘meaty.’

Taste: The taste was passable. And by passable, I mean that I wouldn’t mind having it in a sandwich again. However, they were a little bit on the bland side. I wish they had more of a savory pop to them. They pair well with other dressings in a sandwich since the taste isn’t aggressive, but I think it could have a little more of a ‘umph!’

Overall: I think it was good. I think it definitely could have been better, but I don’t think it’s fair to expect a vegan faux meat product to taste just like meat. Yves did a great job with trying to replicate real salami slices! I’d love more flavor and more toughness from the slices, but it’s not a big deal. I’d buy these again.
